What is Kombo Butter?
Our Whipped Kombo Butter Foot Balm is the newest addition to Whole Self Care lineup, but what even is Kombo Butter?
Origins
Kombo butter is made from the seed inside of the fruit that falls from the Kombo Tree (Pycanthus Angolensis). A shade tree that can grow as high as 120 feet in the Cocoa forests of Ghana.
The forests promote biodiversity in that the planting of Kombo trees is good for our global environment, counteracting deforestation but an even greater impact is for the local environment and economy.
By providing shade for the cocoa trees, which were already producing an income for local communities, cocoa production is preserved and an additional source of revenue is found in the harvesting Kombo Fruit.
Benefits
Kombo Butter has traditionally been used as a natural pain reliever and treatment for various skin conditions. Science has revealed its high myristoleic acid content which has been used in treating joint and muscle pain. This alone made it impossible to not want to include it in our Foot Balm recipe.
In addition, this butter has many of the “antis”— Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, and Anti-fungal making it a great addition to skincare formulations.
Experience
Kombo Butter is not too different from the many butters we’re used to. Aside from its dark and rich color and slight graininess that’s reduced after production, Kombo Butter wears the familiar smoky, earthy scent of natural butters well. By itself Kombo is light and slick with a slight tack and absorbs easily into the skin providing softness without feeling oily. Blended with Shea it offers a smoothness and bounce to the blend as well as a pleasant coffee color that let’s you know something’s different about this one.
With all of the great benefits shared via testimonials, some have reported an adverse reaction to Kombo Butter. Though negative reactions are often reduced when Kombo is combined with other ingredients, we are all different. Please do a patch test to ensure your chemistry aligns with Kombo Butter before applying to large areas of the Body.
Due to it’s coloring some have found that it does stain light colored clothing if not allowed to absorb into the skin before coming into contact with the fabric.
Overall, the benefits to our global community and your skin are worth learning more. And being that Kombo is the new kid on the block the best way to get to know it, is to give it a try!
